Spending a decent amount of money on beautiful curly hair extensions only for it to end up looking like a rat's nest can be very frustrating. Investing in high-quality extensions is just the start of the journey. If you want to look great and extend the life of your curly bundles, you have to adopt a healthy hair care routine, same as you would for your own hair.  Here are a few tips to get you started!

  1. Gentle Cleansing

Hair extensions should be cared for as you would your OWN natural hair. Weekly to biweekly shampooing is required to remove product build-up that will cause dryness and lead to tangling and shedding.  Opt for a sulfate-free shampoo that provides moisture while gently cleansing.

  1. Moisturize and Style

Heavy conditioners are not necessary for everyday use.  While it's important to condition after each shampoo, using that same conditioner on a daily basis will make hair look dingy and limp. Use a leave-in conditioner product formulated to provide moisture and curl definition.  Not only will this make detangling a breeze, but you can minimize the number of products for styling.  You may be able to avoid the use of drying hair gels all together!

  1. Detangle when wet

Hair tangles.  This is a fact.  However, if you purchase quality, cuticle-aligned hair extensions, you can minimize tangling.  Use a wide-tooth comb, Denman brush, or a specialized detangling brush starting from the ends and work your way up. You will get the best results and avoid frizz if you brush while hair is wet rather than dry.  Combing or brushing dry curls can cause excessive shedding, and you certainly don’t want that!

  1. Drying

Allow your curly hair extensions some time to completely air dry. If you are in a rush, you can use a  blow dryer with a diffuser attachment like the Nano Silver Lightweight Hair Dryer on low heat and gently scrunch the curls to set. Using high heat without a diffuser will result in frizzing and tangling. After the hair is completely dry, apply a lightweight hair oil or serum like coconut or argan oil.

  1. Sleep with satin

A proper night time routine is sure to extend the life of your style.  Place hair into 4 or five loose twists and cover with a satin bonnet or sleep with a satin pillowcase.  Satin fabric holds moisture whereas cotton strips moisture from your hair resulting in dryness, frizz, and breakage.  Remember, even though you are wearing a weave, you should care for the hair the same way you would care for your own!

Not too bad, right?  Treat your hair extensions with a little tlc, and you'll look fabulous while protecting your investment!
